Angkor Wat in Cambodia is truly one of the world’s great ancient ruins. It’s the No. 1 place to visit in Cambodia and there’s no question why.
I had the chance to visit at the end of 2017 after finishing a week of volunteering at a nearby English school. A group of four volunteers decided to go together and we rented a tuk tuk driver to take us from Siem Reap.
Our pickup was arranged for 5 a.m. so that we could see the sunrise behind the main Angkor Wat temple. Getting an early start was also a strategy designed to beat the powerful heat and humidity that is prevalent throughout South East Asia.
After sunrise at Angkor Wat, our tuk tuk stopped at several other impressive structures, including the Ta Prohm temple that is famous for the massive tree roots that have taken hold on the stonework.
